Eye am watching youBird Project Question: How many birds visit my bird bath when there's nothing but a bird bath V.S. when a soccer ball with eyes is there looking at them.
Hypothesis: I think more birds will take a bath when there is not a ball with eyes looking at them. I think this because if there's a ball with eyes looking at them they will think its a predator or just super creepy and fly away.
Background Information
Question: Why do birds bathe, and what is the process?
Answer: They first drink out of the bird bath, then splash around in the water for a few minutes to clean their feathers. They then find a spot in the sun and perch there to let their feathers dry. They bathe to keep there feathers clean and feel fabulous. Description I could not find a time to do my bird experiment so I am changing it to a slightly different project. QuestionI am going to have a bird feeder filled with food setup at school and in four days I will see how much food was eaten without eyes watching through the window. Then I will do the same thing except I will tape paper printed out eyes on the window.
Hypotheses I think that more food will be eaten when there is not eyes watching them v.s. when there is eyes watching them. I think this because I think the birds will think a predator there and fly away or just be super creeped out and fly away.
Independent and dependent variableMy independent is having the eyes there and not having the eyes there. My dependent variable is amount of food eaten.
Materials I will be using 1 squirrel proof bird feeder, Royal Wing high energy bird food, and a cut out picture of a eagle. I will check on it every 7 days.
Conclusion
I was very surprised by the results. When there was no eyes watching the birds there was 410 ML eaten from the bird feeder. With eyes watching the birds there was 600 ML eaten! The birds obviously saw the eyes so I think either the birds did not care or did not see the eyes as a predator. My hypothesis was completely wrong.
